I'll go back again and then start to develop, the. At the same time, if I think something is very nice, I'll also add one star. Then I go back to the beginning and review the shots again, marking any I really like with a green border. As I do that I might mark a really nice shot with a green border but I don't get caught up in that shot. I'll continue this until all of the shots I know I will never use are gone.
At some point, if in the hundreds, I go ahead and mass delete those images, one fell swoop and they are gone.

I download from a card reader, let the previews finish, then run through the images to cull out the first round, the really poor shots, bad exposure, blurred, etc., marking those with an X. I do know that a lot of photographers seem to like Photo Mechanic but I've used LrC for the last 10 years to cull thousands of images: maybe I'm more patient. You don't say how you use LrC to review and cull and that might have helped, I think, those of us reading to determine if you might use it differently.

Photo Mechanic can be a bit overwhelming, but there are some good tutorials on how to use it from people like Jason O'Dell. For presentations I can use the watermark to apply camera, lens and shooting data to each file. Those watermarks can include wild cards to automatically apply things like title, copyright or image data. Photo Mechanic can generate small files for web use directly from the embedded JPEG files. I only bring my Selects into Lightroom for editing and it's largely a drag and drop process that takes just one click. I might have 5-10 similar images with the same rating, but I might only edit one. Likewise I use filters for a final review of discards before deleting. I use filters in PM to only look at my 4 and 5 rated images for Selects. Once IPTC and other data is loaded to the RAW file in PM, it's available downstream in any RAW converter or editing program.Īfter rating images using Stars in PM, I use Color tags to identify the Selects for editing. It also allows you to save IPTC templates so all of my keywords, captions, location data, and other IPTC data can be saved and loaded at another time for a similar shoot. I apply basic keywords upon ingest, and then apply additional keywords as needed. I use wild cards to automatically apply the date shot to both folder names and file names. I use Photo Mechanic to ingest and rename files. In comparison, Lightroom needs to be set up to use the embedded JPEG files, and it can take time to reprocess the RAW file to create previews and 100% views. Nikon and Canon RAW files include small basic JPEG files as well as a 100% view without needing any processing. It starts by using the embedded JPEG files in the RAW image. Photo Mechanic was developed with AP photographers in mind, so it is built around fast processing for people who need to quickly work through hundreds or thousands of images on a same day basis. I've been using it for more than 10 years as the front end with several different editing programs. If Lightroom had Canon profiles for my camera and the Canon digital lens optimizer I would go the Lightroom to Photoshop route, using 'open as smart object in photoshop' this gives easy access back to the original raw within Photoshop.Ĭlick to expand.Almost without question, Photo Mechanic from Camera Bits is the best product for the front end workflow - download, renaming, applying metadata, reviewing, rating, identifying selects, keywords, captions, and a lot more.
These days Lightroom is mainly an organizer rather than editor. After photoshop I save the final tiff back into this years lightroom folder and also in a 'keepers' folder. I work on every possible keeper in dpp4 a little but mainly Photoshop set to open the tiff from dpp4 in camera raw, which is basically the same as Lightroom. Any possibles the raw gets saved to my Lightroom folder for this year and later I sync the folder.

These days though I use the Canon software which brings everything into dpp4 for initial review.
but I also like Lightroom with the painter tool.
